Ornamental realism tattoos in Boston

Blackwork ornamental realism and black and grey realism — bold, saturated black ink worked into ornamental pattern, geometric structure and finely rendered figures, made to command the body and hold its contrast for decades.

Method

How I approach it

Every piece starts with a body part and a concept — maybe a feeling, a handful of words, or an image. From there I build a composition intuitively, shaped by how the work will read wrapped onto that part of the body, with any existing tattoos treated as part of the overall composition.

I borrow heavily from graphic design: rhythm, flow and deliberate design choices that direct the eye around the body and through the tattoo. A design that looks balanced flat on paper rarely reads as balanced on a limb, so the composition answers to your anatomy, not the page.

Often the design process takes longer than the tattoo itself. Finding harmony between the tattoo and the body is the main focus, and it can take multiple iterations — I'll tell you plainly when an idea needs to be bigger, simpler, or placed somewhere else to work.

Suited to

Projects and placements

Forearms and inner arms, shoulders and upper arms, sternum and underbust, spine, ribs, calves and thighs — placements where pattern and geometric structure can follow the natural axes of the body.

Common subjects: ornamental framing and borders, geometric and symmetrical composition, blackout and heavy pattern, and finely rendered figures in black and grey.

This work also pairs well with existing tattoos, tying a collection together with weight and contrast rather than competing with it.

Questions

Common questions

What is blackwork ornamental realism?
Blackwork tattooing executed as ornament — solid, saturated blacks shaped into ornamental pattern, geometric structure and finely rendered subjects. It's work that uses the full weight of black ink to command the body and immortalise an idea, rather than avoiding large fields of ink. For me that umbrella includes heavy ornamental pattern, blackout and geometric blackwork.
How does blackwork ornamental realism hold up over time?
Solid, saturated black is the most age-resistant ink you can put in skin. I plan line weight, spacing and detail density around where the piece is going, and aftercare and sun protection do the rest — see the aftercare page.
Does ornamental realism include black and grey realism?
Yes. For me the umbrella covers heavy ornamental pattern, geometric blackwork, blackout, and finely rendered figures worked in black and grey — subjects that use the full weight of black ink rather than avoiding it.
How is an ornamental realism piece priced?
Rates are $200 / hour and $1,200 / full day. Bold work does not automatically mean fast — density of detail matters — so I'll estimate once I know the design, size and placement.
