Fineline tattoos in Boston
Fine line work executed with close attention to detail and technique. Work that ornaments the body without overpowering it — floral, ornamental, script and finely rendered subjects.

Method
How I approach it
Fine line work is unforgiving, so the drawing has to be right before anything else happens. I work the design out at full size, check it against the placement, and make the line weights answer to the scale of the body part rather than the page.
Ornamental pieces get mapped on the skin so symmetry follows your anatomy — a mirrored design that is perfectly even on paper rarely reads as even on a limb.
Detail density is a decision, not a default. I'll tell you honestly when a design needs to be bigger or simpler to still look good in ten years.

Projects and placements
Forearms and inner arms, sternum and underbust, spine, ribs, ankles and the back of the calf — placements where a delicate line can follow a natural axis of the body.
Common subjects: floral and botanical, ornamental framing and borders, script, and finely rendered figures or objects.
Fineline also works well alongside heavier existing tattoos, softening and connecting a collection rather than competing with it.
For examples of finely rendered work, see the portfolio and the ornamental realism gallery.
Questions
Common questions
- What is fineline tattooing?
- Fineline tattooing is work built from thin, precise single-needle or tight-group lines rather than heavy outlines — fine detail, soft shading and designs that sit lightly on the skin. It suits floral and botanical subjects, ornamental framing, script and small, finely rendered figures.
- Does fine line work hold up over time?
- Thin lines need to be placed and spaced with ageing in mind. I plan line weight and detail density around where the piece is going, and aftercare and sun protection do the rest — see the aftercare page.
- Can fineline and blackwork sit together?
- Yes, and they often do in my work. A finely rendered subject next to a heavier ornamental frame gives a piece contrast and depth.
- How is a fineline piece priced?
- Rates are $200 / hour and $1,200 / full day, with a $150 minimum. Small does not automatically mean fast, or easy— density of detail matters — so I'll estimate once I know the design, size and placement.
